Drilling down for more accessible and transparent natural resources information
The challenge
The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) is a global drive to promote the open and accountable management of oil, gas and mineral resources. It’s an important initiative – in many resource-rich developing nations, the benefits of resource extraction may be lost through mismanagement and corruption.
Until recently, the UK’s online response to the initiative was hosted on the GOV.UK website. However, its national and global importance required a standalone website.
The process
Although UKEITI already had a web presence, our process began with a detailed discovery phase – to ensure we didn’t repeat the shortcomings (or ignore the benefits) of before.
We conducted a series of collaborative workshop sessions to understand the needs of different stakeholders, and created a suite of typical ‘personas’. From there, we mapped out user journeys, identified all content requirements and website features, developed the information architecture and created a clean and engaging design.
The results
The new UKEITI website was built on the Drupal platform and includes a robust and intuitive content management system for editors to create and manage content, including news and events, publication and reports.
Extensive and detailed content is ‘searchable’ and users can filter results to easily locate information they are looking for. Users can also choose their preferred display for a friendlier and more dynamic experience.
