Christmas may be a time for giving, but sometimes the best presents are made on a shoestring. Our web application was intended to spread Christmas cheer via Twitter. The savings we made were donated to charity.

Client brief and objectives

The brief for this project was simple: find a low cost and creative way to let our clients, peers, friends and colleagues know we wish them a happy festive season.

With the use of digital and social media being the norm we wanted to showcase our skills and thinking to our clients while promoting our work and brand.

Our approach

Holiday cards present a unique opportunity for a digital agency to go above and beyond and to produce something different and fun. For our 2010 Christmas greeting cards we came up with a multi-faceted concept based on the recession and doing things on a shoestring budget.

By taking advantage of the hashtag(#) popularity on Twitter, we started our own #ShoestringXmas hashtag. We then designed, built and developed our own Twitter aggregator to display all responses that used the hashtag.

We also recycled traditional Christmas cards that staff had saved from the year before to make a set of new cards promoting the shoestring concept because we have a number of clients who aren't able to use Twitter.

Finally, we also made a short stop-motion video of project's development which was viewed 393 times on Vimeo.

Results and effectiveness

Our results outweighed the amount of cards we sent out and had two high peaks of increase traffic to our site. We received emails and tweets letting us know how positively people felt about it. Peers and friends participated and the team had a great time doing it and getting involved.

We were nominated for the 2011 DADI awards under the category of in-house website or campaign.
