    SXSW interactive summary – Day 1 & 2

March 12th through 17th we attended sessions, panels, workshops, open conversations, keynotes and networking events at SXSW Interactive, Austin, Texas.

In its largest year to date, SXSW Interactive has been going on for for 13 years now and has a strong reputation.

Below is a brief synopsis of what we got from the sessions.

    Social Media for Your Business
Event description: Learn to look further than Twitter and Facebook when it comes to using social media to help your business succeed on the web. Learn solid strategies, how to measure success, and all the tools you need to succeed in the fastest growing marketing medium on the web.

Less indepth than we hoped for, however they reiterated some of the basics:

    • Social media can be used to create or improve your reputation
    • Focus on link attraction
    • Check your analytics
    • Set up Google Alerts fro your competitors as well as yourself
    • Set up competitions or call to action to attract fans
    • Leverage your embed codes for more links
    • Decide what you want to achieve then move backwards
    • Be human
    • Understand your ROI
    • Forums – are overlooked and powerful – see big-boards.com
    • Yahoo answers rank high in Google search
    • Stumble Upon groups

Chris Winfield, one of the panel members has a blog post of The Best Niche Social Media News Sites Right Now to check out for more inspiration. (More …)

My other car is a beetle

City Car Club EdinburghOur MD, Greig Tosh, shares his experience and appreciation for the City Car Club:

I don’t own a car. Strike that. I own a 1962 VW Beetle which needs thousands spent on it.

What I mean is; I don’t own a roadworthy day-to-day car. I did until December last year, when my (t)rusty 20 year old BMW’s MOT/service bill would have cost more than the car itself.

    Now, this obviously presented options.

The Government’s scrappage scheme would give me £2,000 for it; which was about £1,800 more than a passing punter on autotrader.co.uk would have.

(Didn’t try Webuyanycar.com, mainly through fear of that jingle greeting me if I visited the site, “any any any any…”)

But as a condition of the scrappage scheme being that I’d need to buy a brand new car. This I’ve always rejected on the immediate depreciation argument, hastily backed with the business mantra that you should never own a depreciating asset. Translation = consciously aware of budgetary factors affecting consumer durables. Plain English translation = tight.

Coupled with this is the fact that living in the city and walking/busing to work means that Monday to Friday, the need for a car is almost zero.

Still have the need at weekend for shopping and “stuff” but no more than 2 or 3 hours each day.

    So, continuing with the options.

    Saying goodbye

Last week we had an even more exciting night out than our usual Friday antics.

We were saying goodbye to three lovely ladies who have been with us for a while, and there was no other way than to do it in style.

Sam, Emily & Perii thanks for your many years of hard work. We will miss you all.
